How to Fix 2.4GHz Wireless Dongle Not Detected on the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller

Causes

  • USB-C 2.4GHz wireless adapter not fully inserted into the PC port or plugged into a USB hub that does not provide enough power for the 8Speed dongle to establish a stable RF link
  • Windows USB selective suspend setting cutting power to the USB port where the dongle is connected, causing the 8Speed wireless adapter to lose synchronization with the controller
  • Controller not switched to 2.4GHz mode — the Ultimate 2 requires the physical slider on the back of the controller to be set to the 2.4G position (not Bluetooth or Off) before the dongle can pair
  • Outdated or corrupted 8BitDo firmware on the wireless dongle itself — the 2.4G adapter has its own updatable firmware that can become corrupt if the controller firmware update process was interrupted
  • Radio frequency interference from nearby USB 3.0 devices, wireless routers, or other 2.4GHz peripherals causing the 8Speed proprietary protocol to fail link training with the controller
  • Driver conflict on Windows where the dongle is mistakenly enumerated as an unknown USB input device instead of the 8BitDo 2.4G receiver

How to Fix

  1. Ensure the physical mode switch on the back of the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 controller is slid all the way to the 2.4G position (the middle position between BT and Off). If the slider is in Bluetooth mode, the controller will not respond to the 2.4GHz dongle.
  2. Plug the USB-C 2.4GHz wireless adapter directly into a USB-C or USB-A port on your PC — do not use a USB hub, extension cable, or front-panel port. The 8Speed dongle is sensitive to power delivery and signal integrity; a direct motherboard USB port provides the most reliable connection.
  3. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the wireless dongle (a small pinhole button near the USB-C connector) for 3 seconds until the LED on the dongle blinks rapidly. Then press and hold the pairing button on the top edge of the controller (next to the USB-C port) for 3 seconds. The controller's Fire Ring RGB will flash white during pairing and turn solid once connected.
  4. Open Device Manager on Windows (Win + X → Device Manager). Expand Human Interface Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers. Look for any entry labeled "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" or "8BitDo 2.4G Receiver". If you see a yellow warning triangle, right-click the device → Uninstall Device, then unplug and replug the dongle to force Windows to reinstall the driver.
  5. Disable USB selective suspend in Windows Power Settings to prevent the OS from cutting power to the dongle's USB port. Open Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → expand USB settings → USB selective suspend setting → set to Disabled for both "On battery" and "Plugged in". Click Apply and restart your PC.
  6. Download the 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 from the official 8BitDo support page. Connect the controller via USB-C cable (wired mode). Open the software, go to the Firmware Update tab, and check for updates for both the Controller Firmware and the 2.4G Adapter Firmware. Firmware version 2.01 or newer includes critical fixes for the 8Speed wireless link stability. If either component shows an update available, apply it and do not disconnect the controller or turn off the PC during the update process.
  7. Move any USB 3.0 devices (external drives, USB 3.0 hubs) away from the dongle's USB port. USB 3.0 generates 2.4GHz electromagnetic interference that can disrupt the 8Speed signal. If possible, plug the dongle into a USB 2.0 port (black or white plastic inside) instead, as USB 2.0 ports emit less RF noise. Keep the dongle and controller within 3 meters (10 feet) of each other with a clear line of sight.
  8. As a final fallback, test the controller in wired mode by connecting it via the included USB-C cable. If the controller works perfectly in wired USB-C mode but still fails with the dongle, the 2.4GHz adapter hardware may be defective. Contact 8BitDo support for a replacement dongle — the Ultimate 2's 8Speed dongle is paired at the factory and not all third-party 2.4GHz receivers are compatible.
