How to Fix Bluetooth Pairing Failure on the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller

Causes

  • Controller left in 2.4GHz or wired mode — the Ultimate 2 must be switched to Bluetooth mode (BT position on the back slider) before it will appear as a discoverable Bluetooth device on any platform
  • Residual pairing data from a previous connection stored on the controller, causing it to attempt reconnection to the last paired device instead of entering discovery mode for a new host
  • Windows Bluetooth stack failing to recognize the controller as an HID gamepad — the controller appears in Bluetooth settings as "8BitDo Ultimate 2" but Windows categorizes it as an audio or input device without proper driver support
  • Nintendo Switch Bluetooth pairing mode conflict — the Ultimate 2 uses a different pairing procedure for Switch mode (hold pair + specific button combo) versus standard Bluetooth, causing confusion and connection failures

How to Fix

  1. Slide the physical mode switch on the back of the controller to the BT (Bluetooth) position — this is the position closest to the USB-C port. The Fire Ring RGB will pulse blue when the controller is in Bluetooth pairing mode. If the switch was in 2.4G or Off mode, Bluetooth discovery will not work.
  2. With the controller in BT mode, press and hold the pairing button (the small button on the top edge near the USB-C port) for 3 seconds until the RGB ring starts flashing rapidly in blue/white. This forces the controller to enter deep discovery mode. On your host device, go to Bluetooth settings and search for "8BitDo Ultimate 2" in the list of available devices. Select it to complete pairing. If the controller does not appear, power it off (slide to Off) and slide back to BT, then repeat.
  3. On Windows 10/11: After pairing in Bluetooth settings, open Control Panel → Devices and Printers. Look for "8BitDo Ultimate 2" under "Unspecified" or "Game Controllers". If the device icon shows a warning or is grayed out, right-click it → Remove Device. Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → remove any existing "8BitDo Ultimate 2" entries. Restart your PC, put the controller back into pairing mode, and pair again fresh. Then go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices → scroll to "Game Controllers" and select 8BitDo Ultimate 2 → click Remove device and re-add if needed.
  4. On Nintendo Switch: The Ultimate 2 requires a specific pairing sequence. Slide to BT mode, then hold the pair button while simultaneously pressing Y + Start (the + button on the right) for 3 seconds. The RGB should flash rapidly. Go to Switch System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Grip/Order. Wait for "8BitDo Ultimate 2" to appear in the list and select it. If the controller does not connect, restart the Switch completely and try again.
  5. On Android / iOS / iPadOS: After sliding to BT mode and pressing the pair button, open your device's Bluetooth settings and wait for "8BitDo Ultimate 2" to appear. If it fails to appear or shows "Pairing rejected," go to your device's Bluetooth settings and forget any previous 8BitDo entries. Restart Bluetooth on your phone/tablet, then try pairing again. On Android 14+, you may need to grant the "8BitDo Ultimate 2" permission to connect to input devices in the Bluetooth permissions dialog.
  6. Download 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on a Windows PC and connect the controller via USB-C cable. Go to the Firmware Update tab and check for the latest controller firmware. Versions 2.10+ include specific fixes for Bluetooth LE pairing stability on Windows 11 24H2, Android 15, and iOS 26. Update to the latest available version — this resolves the majority of Bluetooth connection drop and pairing failure issues.
  7. If the controller keeps disconnecting shortly after Bluetooth pairing, your PC's Bluetooth adapter may be entering a power-saving state. Open Device Manager → expand Bluetooth → right-click your Bluetooth adapter (e.g., Intel Wireless Bluetooth) → Properties → Power Management → uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Repeat for any "Bluetooth LE Enum" devices listed under Bluetooth.
  8. As a last resort, perform a factory reset of the controller's Bluetooth module: slide the switch to Off, then hold the pairing button + L1 + R1 + Start simultaneously while sliding to BT mode. Hold all buttons for 5 seconds. The RGB will flash red briefly, indicating the Bluetooth pairing memory has been cleared. Re-pair with your device using the standard procedure (step 2).
