How to Fix AirTag Battery Not Working After Replacement

Causes

  • CR2032 battery with bitter coating (denatonium benzoate) — since 2022, major battery manufacturers like Duracell and Energizer have added a bitter anti-child-swallowing coating to CR2032 batteries. This coating is non-conductive and prevents the battery from making electrical contact with the AirTag's positive terminal. The AirTag may power on briefly (emitting a chime) but then fail within minutes or show a "Low Battery" warning immediately after installation
  • CR2032 battery with lithium chemistry incompatibility — AirTag requires a 3V lithium manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2) CR2032 cell. Some generic or re-branded CR2032 batteries use a different lithium chemistry (Li-FeS2) or have a lower nominal voltage (2.8V instead of 3.0V). The AirTag's voltage detection circuit interprets anything below 2.9V as a critically low battery and triggers a false low-battery alert within 24 hours of installation
  • Protective pull tab left partially attached — some CR2032 batteries ship with a small clear plastic protective tab over the positive (+) terminal. If this tab is not fully removed before insertion, it creates a partial electrical isolation that causes intermittent contact. The AirTag may appear to work initially but then disconnect when moved or shaken
  • Battery contact corrosion inside the AirTag — the CR2032 compartment is not fully sealed. Over time, moisture ingress can cause mild corrosion on the stainless steel positive contact spring (the small prong in the centre of the compartment) or the negative contact ring (the concentric metal ring around the edge). This corrosion adds electrical resistance that the AirTag's low-power detection circuit interprets as a depleted battery, even with a fresh CR2032 installed
  • Battery not fully seated or rotated past the locking detent — the AirTag battery cover rotates approximately 30 degrees to lock. If the cover is not properly aligned with the three locking tabs, it may not press the battery firmly against the contact spring. The battery can shift inside the compartment during movement, causing intermittent disconnection that manifests as a "No Location Available" error in Find My
  • Third-party battery with different thickness — while all CR2032 cells are nominally 3.2 mm thick, actual thickness varies from 3.0 mm to 3.4 mm between brands. Batteries thinner than 3.1 mm may not compress the contact spring enough to ensure reliable electrical contact, especially after the spring has been compressed and released multiple times during previous battery changes

How to Fix

  1. Use a CR2032 battery without bitter coating or remove the coating — the most reliable fix is to use a CR2032 battery that is explicitly labelled as "bitter coating free" or "for use with Apple AirTag." As of 2025, Duracell sells a "Duracell AirTag Battery" (CR2032 with copper-top finish, no bitter coating) in a 2-pack marked with a blue and white AirTag-compatible label. Energizer sells a similar "Energizer AirTag Battery" with a green label. If you already have a coated battery, you can carefully clean the bitter coating from the positive terminal by rubbing it vigorously with a dry paper towel for 20-30 seconds. The coating is water-soluble — you can also rinse the positive terminal briefly under warm running water, dry thoroughly with a paper towel, and allow to air-dry for 5 minutes before inserting. Do NOT clean the negative terminal (the larger flat side) — only the positive (+) side needs cleaning
  2. Verify your battery brand and purchase date — Panasonic CR2032 (made in Japan or Indonesia) and Sony CR2032 (made in Japan) batteries are consistently confirmed compatible with AirTag without modification. These brands do not apply the bitter coating to their standard CR2032 cells. Avoid no-name generic CR2032 batteries purchased from discount stores, vending machines, or unbranded multi-packs — these frequently use lower-grade lithium chemistry that triggers false low-battery warnings. For maximum reliability, buy your CR2032 from a reputable electronics retailer (DigiKey, Mouser) or directly from Apple's own AirTag battery replacement program (Apple sells a certified CR2032 with correct spring pressure specifications)
  3. Perform a complete battery re-seat with contact cleaning — press down on the polished stainless steel AirTag back cover and rotate it counter-clockwise (left) until the three tabs disengage. Remove the cover and the old battery. Inspect the centre positive contact spring — it should be a small shiny metal prong approximately 3 mm tall. If it appears dull, darkened, or has white/green corrosion flecks, clean it by gently rubbing with a pencil eraser (the abrasive rubber removes oxidation without damaging the plating). For the negative contact ring (the concentric metal band around the edge of the compartment), wipe it with a clean dry cloth. Insert a fresh compatible CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing up (the side with the brand name and markings). Place the back cover on and rotate clockwise (right) until it clicks firmly into place — you should hear a distinct mechanical click and the cover should be flush with the AirTag body with no raised edge
  4. Confirm the battery is detected by playing the chime test — after installing the new battery, the AirTag should automatically play a short chime (approximately 2 seconds, a rising two-tone sound). If you do not hear the chime, the battery is not making contact. Remove the cover, remove the battery, and slightly bend the positive contact spring upward by 0.5 mm using a small flathead screwdriver or a toothpick — this increases spring pressure against the battery. Reinsert the battery and listen for the chime. If you still hear nothing, the battery is either coated, too thin, or the wrong chemistry — replace it with a known-compatible brand from the list above
  5. Check the AirTag appears in the Find My app — open the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad, tap the Items tab at the bottom, and confirm your AirTag appears in the list with a battery indicator icon. A green battery icon means the battery is at full capacity. A yellow or red battery icon indicates the battery is not being read correctly despite the new installation — repeat step 3 with a known-compatible battery brand. If the AirTag does not appear at all, tap "Add Item" in Find My to re-register it — this is necessary if the battery was disconnected for more than 5 minutes, which causes the AirTag to enter a dormant state that requires re-pairing
  6. Re-pair the AirTag if it still does not appear — if the AirTag does not show up in Find My after battery replacement, it may have been factory reset by the long power loss. To re-pair: press the AirTag against the top edge of your iPhone (near the Dynamic Island or notch on iPhones 12-16, or near the NFC antenna on earlier models). Your iPhone should show a "AirTag" animation with a Connect button. Tap Connect, name your AirTag (e.g., "Keys," "Backpack"), and tap Continue. The AirTag is now paired and will appear in Find My. If no animation appears, ensure Bluetooth is enabled, NFC is enabled (Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff → NFC turned ON), and your iPhone is running iOS 17.0 or later. If the animation still fails, force-close Find My and try again with the AirTag held closer to the top edge of the phone
  7. Update your iPhone to the latest iOS version — AirTag relies on the Find My network stack in iOS for battery level reporting, location updates, and Precision Finding. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install any available updates. iOS 18.5 and later include improved low-battery detection calibration that reduces false "Replace Battery" alerts when using third-party CR2032 batteries with slightly lower terminal voltage. After updating, remove and reinsert the battery (step 3) to trigger a fresh battery level measurement
  8. If none of the above works, the AirTag's contact spring may be physically damaged — inspect the positive contact spring under magnification. If the spring is bent flat, broken, or missing, the AirTag has a hardware fault and cannot reliably power any battery. Contact Apple Support (support.apple.com) or visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider for a battery compartment evaluation. The AirTag is not user-serviceable for spring replacement — if the contact spring is damaged, Apple's out-of-warranty replacement fee is $29 (same as the cost of a new AirTag).
