How to Fix AirTag Not Connecting or Not Showing in Find My

Device: Apple AirTag · Apple Added

Causes

  • AirTag not in pairing mode — a new AirTag automatically enters pairing mode when its CR2032 battery is inserted and the battery cover is pressed down. If the battery was factory-installed with a plastic pull tab, removing the tab starts pairing mode. However, if the battery was already inserted before opening the package, or if you removed and reinserted the battery too quickly (under 5 seconds), the AirTag may not enter pairing mode properly. The AirTag must detect the battery insertion as a power-on event to begin the Bluetooth LE advertisement sequence that triggers the iPhone pairing animation
  • AirTag already linked to a different Apple ID — this is the most common issue with second-hand or used AirTags. Apple's Activation Lock-style pairing system binds each AirTag to a single Apple ID at a time. If the previous owner did not remove the AirTag from their Find My app before selling or giving it away, the AirTag remains locked to their Apple ID. When you try to pair it, you will see the message "AirTag Already Paired" or "This AirTag is connected to another Apple ID." The AirTag cannot be paired to a new account until the previous owner explicitly removes it from their Find My device list
  • iPhone Bluetooth or NFC stack is in a glitched state — AirTag pairing relies on both Bluetooth LE (for the initial handshake) and NFC (for the proximity animation when held near the top edge of the iPhone). If Bluetooth is partially enabled (such as after using Control Center to disconnect from a device without fully disabling Bluetooth), or if the NFC chip is in a low-power state from a recent Apple Pay transaction, the pairing animation may not trigger. This happens most often when the iPhone has not been restarted in several weeks and the Bluetooth daemon has accumulated memory leaks from repeated connects and disconnects
  • Find My app or iCloud synchronization is not fully configured — the AirTag relies on the Find My app being properly signed into iCloud with the correct Apple ID. If you recently changed your Apple ID password, signed out and back in, or restored your iPhone from a backup, the Find My app may not have fully re-synced your iCloud keychain data. The AirTag setup flow specifically checks for a valid iCloud session before allowing pairing. A partially signed-out iCloud account (where iCloud Drive works but Find My is greyed out) will silently prevent AirTag pairing
  • AirTag firmware corruption from an interrupted update — AirTag firmware updates are delivered automatically over Bluetooth when the AirTag is near its paired iPhone and the iPhone is charging. If the iPhone lost power or moved out of Bluetooth range during a firmware update (for example, you went for a walk while your AirTag was updating), the AirTag's flash memory can be left with a partial firmware image. This corrupted state prevents the AirTag from starting its Bluetooth advertisement sequence on subsequent power-ons, making it invisible to the iPhone during pairing
  • iPhone model too old to support AirTag setup — while any iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later can technically use an AirTag after pairing, the initial pairing animation requires NFC reading capability and Ultra Wideband support for the Precision Finding setup screen. iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone SE (1st generation), and iPhone XR/XS/XS Max (all released before 2020) have NFC tag reading but lack the U1 chip. These models may still pair via Bluetooth by manually triggering detection in Find My → Add Item, but they will not show the automatic pairing animation. If you are using one of these older models and expecting the pop-up animation, no animation will appear even though the AirTag is working normally

How to Fix

  1. Perform a hard reset by cycling the battery with the 5-step trick — press down on the polished stainless steel back cover and rotate counter-clockwise to unlock. Remove the cover and take out the CR2032 battery. Wait 10 seconds, then reinsert the battery with the positive (+) side facing up. Replace the cover and rotate clockwise to lock. Wait 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle: remove battery → wait 10 seconds → reinsert → lock cover → wait 10 seconds a total of five (5) times. After the fifth insertion, hold the AirTag within 1 centimetre of the top edge of your iPhone (near the Dynamic Island or notch). This 5-cycle reset is widely reported on Apple Support Community forums as the most reliable method to clear a stuck pairing state. The repeated power cycling fully drains residual charge from the AirTag's internal capacitors and forces a clean boot of the Bluetooth firmware
  2. Verify that the AirTag is not already paired with another Apple ID — bring the AirTag close to your iPhone. If you see the message "This AirTag is connected to another Apple ID" or "AirTag Already Paired," you must contact the previous owner and ask them to remove the AirTag from their Find My app. On their iPhone: Find My → Items → tap the AirTag → scroll to bottom → tap "Remove Item" → confirm. Once removed, the AirTag will appear as "Not Paired" on their Find My list. After this, reset the AirTag using step 1 and try pairing again. If the previous owner cannot be reached, Apple Support can verify proof of purchase (original receipt showing serial number) and remove the Activation Lock on the AirTag — call Apple Support at 1-800-MY-APPLE or visit getsupport.apple.com with your purchase receipt ready
  3. Force-restart your iPhone to reset the Bluetooth and NFC stacks — on iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16: press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds). On iPhone SE (2nd/3rd gen), iPhone 8 and earlier: press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the Apple logo appears. After the iPhone restarts, unlock it, enable Bluetooth (Settings → Bluetooth → toggle ON), enable NFC (Settings → General → AirDrop & Handoff → NFC toggle ON). Hold the AirTag near the top edge for 10 seconds. The pairing animation should now appear. A forced restart clears the Bluetooth daemon and resets the NFC controller without losing any data
  4. Manually add the AirTag in Find My if the automatic animation does not appear — open the Find My app, tap the Items tab at the bottom, tap the "+" (Add) button in the top-right corner, then tap "Add AirTag." The app will begin searching for nearby unpaired AirTags via Bluetooth. If the AirTag is in pairing mode (battery inserted within the last 5 minutes), it should appear in the list within 10-15 seconds. Tap it, name it (e.g., "Keys," "Backpack"), and tap Continue. This bypasses the NFC animation entirely and pairs via Bluetooth alone. This method works even on iPhones without the U1 chip (iPhone SE, iPhone XR, etc.)
  5. Sign out and back into iCloud to refresh Find My authentication — go to Settings → tap your name at the top → scroll down and tap "Sign Out." You will be asked to enter your Apple ID password to turn off Find My iPhone. Enter it and tap Turn Off. Your iPhone will sign out of iCloud. Wait 30 seconds, then go to Settings → Sign In → enter your Apple ID and password. After signing in, ensure Find My is enabled: Settings → your name → Find My → Find My iPhone toggle ON, and Find My network toggle ON. Then try pairing the AirTag again. Signing out and back in refreshes the iCloud authentication token that the Find My app uses to verify your account when pairing a new AirTag. This resolves cases where the AirTag setup silently fails because Find My thinks you are not properly authenticated
  6. Reset Location & Privacy settings on your iPhone — go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy. Enter your iPhone passcode when prompted and confirm. This resets all location permissions and privacy settings to factory defaults, including the Bluetooth permission that the Find My app needs to scan for AirTags. After the reset, open Find My and grant Location permission when prompted ("While Using the App" or "Always"). Hold the AirTag near the top edge of the iPhone. The NFC pairing animation should now trigger. Note: this reset does not delete any of your data, but you will need to re-grant location permission to apps that previously had it
  7. Update iOS to the latest version — go to Settings → General → Software Update. If an update is available, tap "Download and Install." Apple periodically releases Find My bug fixes and AirTag firmware updates bundled with iOS releases. iOS 18.5 and iOS 19.0 include significant improvements to the AirTag pairing reliability, including a fix for the "AirTag Not Connecting" error that affected iPhones restoring from iCloud backups. After updating, repeat step 1 (battery cycle) and try pairing again. The AirTag firmware update will be delivered automatically within 24 hours of the AirTag being paired and near the iPhone
  8. As a last resort, use a different iPhone to pair the AirTag, then transfer it to your account — borrow a friend or family member's iPhone (running iOS 14.5 or later). Sign out of their iCloud temporarily (Settings → their name → Sign Out). Do NOT sign in with your Apple ID on their phone — instead, have them sign back in with their own Apple ID. Reset the AirTag using the 5-cycle method (step 1), then hold it near their iPhone. The pairing animation should appear. Tap Connect and complete the setup on their iPhone. After pairing, open Find My → Items → tap the AirTag → scroll to bottom → tap "Remove Item." This unlinks the AirTag from their Apple ID. Now reset the AirTag again (one battery cycle is sufficient this time) and pair it with your iPhone normally. This workaround is documented by Apple Support as a valid method when the AirTag refuses to pair due to a corrupted local Bluetooth stack on your iPhone that survives a restart
