Fix Guide
How to Fix Black Video Feed / No Image on the Elgato Facecam 4K
Causes
- Lens cover / privacy cap still attached — the Facecam 4K ships with a removable lens cover that, if left on, shows no image but the camera status LED may still light up, making it appear as though the camera is active
- Camera Hub app is not properly started or is competing with another application that has locked the camera stream — when OBS, Zoom, Teams, or another app opens the camera first, Camera Hub may show a black preview while the other app displays the feed normally
- macOS privacy permissions not granted — on macOS 14+ (Sonoma / Sequoia), the Facecam 4K requires explicit Camera permission for each app, and Camera Hub itself must be authorized separately from OBS or other streaming software
- Windows camera privacy settings blocking access — Windows 11's Camera privacy toggle in Settings can block the Facecam 4K for either specific apps or all apps, causing a black feed in Camera Hub even though Windows shows the camera in Device Manager as working
- USB connection not fully initialized after system sleep or hibernation — the Facecam 4K sometimes fails to renegotiate the USB 3.0 link after the computer wakes from sleep, leaving the camera in a powered but non-streaming state that produces no video data
How to Fix
- Check the lens cover — the Facecam 4K includes a sliding or magnetic lens cover (depending on your unit revision). Make sure it is completely removed from the front of the lens. The lens itself should be clearly visible; if you see a solid black or metal surface covering the glass, remove it.
- Physically reconnect the camera — fully unplug the USB-C cable from both the Facecam 4K and your computer. Wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Ensure the connection is firm at both ends. The Facecam 4K's status LED should light up solid white when properly connected and streaming. If the LED is off, try a different USB cable or port.
- Restart Camera Hub — close Elgato Camera Hub completely (right-click the system tray icon on Windows or the menu bar icon on macOS and select Quit). Also close any other app that might be using the camera (OBS, Zoom, Discord, Chrome). Reopen Camera Hub and check if the preview appears.
- Check macOS privacy permissions — open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Make sure Elgato Camera Hub is toggled ON. Also ensure any other app you want to use the Facecam 4K with (OBS, Zoom, etc.) has Camera permission. If the Facecam 4K was recently connected, you may need to restart the computer for new privacy grants to take effect.
- Check Windows camera privacy — press Win + I → Privacy & Security → Camera. Ensure Camera access is turned On, and that Let apps access your camera is also On. Scroll down and confirm that Elgato Camera Hub and any other apps you use are toggled On. If the toggle was off, turn it on and restart Camera Hub.
- Remove conflicting camera drivers — if you previously used a different webcam (especially built-in laptop cameras or other USB webcams) with OBS or Zoom, the old driver registration can block the Facecam 4K. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand Cameras and Imaging Devices. Right-click any entries that are not the Facecam 4K (e.g., "Integrated Webcam") and select Disable device. Then restart Camera Hub.
- Power cycle the camera to fix sleep/wake issues — if the black feed began after your computer woke from sleep, unplug the Facecam 4K from USB, restart your computer, and plug the camera back in after the OS has fully loaded. To prevent this issue recurring, go to Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers → right-click each USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management → uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Repeat for all USB Root Hub entries.
- Test in another application — open the built-in Camera app on Windows or QuickTime Player on macOS (File → New Movie Recording, then select Facecam 4K as the camera). If the camera works in these apps but not in Camera Hub, reinstall Camera Hub from Elgato's official download page. If it doesn't work in any app, the issue is at the USB/driver level — try a different USB 3.0 controller (e.g., USB-C port instead of USB-A) or test the camera on another computer to rule out a hardware defect.
