Fix Guide
How to Fix the USB3-REQUIRED-FOR-FACECAM Error on the Elgato Facecam 4K
Causes
- Plugged into a USB 2.0 port — the Facecam 4K requires a USB 3.0 (or higher) port for its 4K60 video stream, and USB 2.0 ports (black or white plastic) lack the bandwidth to carry uncompressed 4K video
- Using a third-party USB cable that does not meet USB 3.0 SuperSpeed standards — many replacement cables are USB 2.0-only (even if they physically fit) and will trigger the error immediately
- Motherboard chipset limitation on certain AMD B550 / X570 / A620 platforms where the USB controller drops to USB 2.0 fallback mode under load or after waking from sleep
- Outdated or corrupted USB controller drivers that prevent the host controller from enumerating the Facecam 4K at SuperSpeed (5 Gbps)
- USB port damaged or partially disconnected — bent pins, debris inside the port, or a loose internal connection on the front-panel headers of a desktop PC can prevent USB 3.0 link training
How to Fix
- Identify a USB 3.0 port on your computer — look for ports with blue or red plastic inserts, or ports labeled with SS (SuperSpeed) or USB 3.0 / 3.1 / 3.2. Avoid black or white ports, which are USB 2.0-only. On laptops, use the USB-C port with a USB-C to USB-C connection if available.
- Use only the original USB-C to USB-C cable that shipped with the Facecam 4K. If you must use a different cable, ensure it is rated for USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) or higher and is no longer than 1 meter (3.3 feet). Longer cables introduce signal loss that can prevent SuperSpeed negotiation.
- If using a desktop PC, connect the Facecam 4K directly to a rear motherboard USB port (the ports soldered to the motherboard I/O panel). Front-panel USB ports, especially on budget cases, often use lower-quality internal cables that fail USB 3.0 certification.
- Update your USB controller drivers from the motherboard or laptop manufacturer's support website. For AMD systems, download the latest AMD Chipset Driver from AMD.com — it includes the USB controller driver and fixes the known USB 2.0 fallback issue on B550/X570 boards. Install and reboot.
- Open Elgato Camera Hub, click the gear icon, go to Device and try switching the USB Transfer Mode from Bulk to Isochronous (ISO). ISO mode is more tolerant of marginal USB links and can allow the camera to work even when the USB controller is borderline on bandwidth.
- If the error persists, press Win + X → Device Manager → expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click each USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) entry → Properties → Power Management tab → uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Do this for all USB Root Hub entries, then reboot.
- On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → ensure the Facecam 4K has Camera permission. Then restart the computer and reset the SMC (Apple Silicon: shut down and wait 30 seconds; Intel: shut down, hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds, then release all keys and power on).
- As a last resort, connect the Facecam 4K through a powered USB 3.0 hub with its own AC adapter. Some motherboard USB controllers cannot provide stable SuperSpeed signaling on all ports simultaneously — a powered hub with a dedicated controller chip (such as one using the VL805 chipset) can bypass the motherboard's USB issues entirely.
