How to Fix Auto-Pause and Activity Tracking Issues on the Garmin Fenix 8
Causes
- GPS signal degradation causing false speed-drop detection — the Fenix 8's multi-band GNSS sometimes loses lock in dense urban canyons, heavy tree cover, or narrow mountain valleys, causing the reported speed to momentarily drop below the Auto-Pause threshold (default 2 km/h / 1.2 mph), which triggers an unwanted pause even though you are still moving
- Auto-Pause set to "When Stopped" with an overly sensitive pace threshold — the factory default auto-pause setting pauses the timer any time your pace drops below the configured minimum, but on the Fenix 8, a momentary GPS drift can show a pace of 0:00 per km for 1–2 seconds, which is enough to trigger the pause and then resume almost immediately, creating a stuttering timer
- Auto-Pause enabled via the activity quick-menu accidentally — the Fenix 8's touchscreen + button interface makes it easy to accidentally toggle Auto-Pause on or off during a run or ride when brushing against the screen with sweat, clothing, or a hydration vest strap, especially in rainy conditions where touch sensitivity increases
- GPS mode set to "GPS Only" instead of "All + Multi-Band" — using the basic GPS-only mode (to save battery) provides less accurate speed and position data, particularly on winding trails or urban routes with tall buildings, and the reduced accuracy is more likely to cause momentary speed dropouts that falsely trigger Auto-Pause
- Satellite signal loss in challenging terrain combined with the Fenix 8's SatIQ feature — when SatIQ automatically switches between multi-band and GPS-only modes to save battery, the transition can cause a 2–5 second gap in positioning data, registering as a stop and triggering Auto-Pause even when moving at a steady pace
- Chest heart rate monitor (HRM) strap interference — the Fenix 8's Bluetooth 5.3 connection to an external HRM strap can cause RF interference with the GNSS antenna located in the watch band, degrading GPS accuracy and causing intermittent speed readings that confuse the Auto-Pause logic
How to Fix
- Check your Auto-Pause setting — during an activity, press and hold the upper right button (Start/Stop) to open the activity quick-menu. Look for the Auto-Pause icon (a stopwatch with a pause symbol). If it's highlighted, tap it to disable it. For a more permanent fix, go to Settings → Activities & Apps, select your activity type (Run, Hike, Bike, etc.), scroll to Auto-Pause, and set it to Never or Off to completely disable automatic pausing.
- Switch GPS mode to All + Multi-Band — go to Settings → System → Satellites → GPS and select All + Multi-Band. This enables the Fenix 8 to receive signals from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou simultaneously across multiple frequency bands, providing the most accurate speed and position data. While this consumes more battery, it dramatically reduces the GPS drift that causes false auto-pauses. For battery-conscious users, use this setting for critical workouts and switch to GPS Only for casual walks.
- Adjust the auto-pause pace/speed threshold — if you prefer to keep Auto-Pause enabled, adjust its sensitivity: go to Settings → Activities & Apps, select your activity, scroll to Auto-Pause → Pace/Speed Threshold and set it to a lower value such as 0:30/km (for running) or 3 km/h (for hiking/walking). This prevents momentary GPS dropouts from triggering a pause while still pausing when you actually stop for traffic lights or rest breaks.
- Disable Auto-Pause via activity data screen widget — add the "Auto-Pause" data field to your activity data screen so you can see at a glance whether it's on or off. Select the activity, go to Data Screens → Add Data Screen → Auto-Pause. When you see the field show "Off" but the timer keeps pausing, tap the field to toggle it on then off again to reset the state. This clears a known software glitch where the watch displays "Off" but behaves as if Auto-Pause is still active.
- Turn off touchscreen during activities — the Fenix 8's touchscreen can accidentally toggle Auto-Pause when wet or bumped. During activities, press and hold the upper left button (Light) to open the controls menu, tap the touchscreen icon to lock the touch input. Use only the physical buttons (Start/Stop, Lap) to control the activity timer. This prevents accidental toggles from sweat, rain, or clothing contact.
- Reduce interference from HRM straps and accessories — if you use a Bluetooth chest heart rate monitor, try positioning the watch on your opposite wrist from the HRM sensor. Alternatively, switch the Fenix 8's GPS satellite setting from Auto Select to All + Multi-Band manually (step 2), as this forces a more robust positioning mode that is less susceptible to RF interference from nearby BLE devices.
- Reset GPS ephemeris data and re-acquire satellite almanac — if false pauses persist, connect the Fenix 8 to Garmin Express on your computer and sync it. This forces the watch to download fresh GPS ephemeris data (satellite orbit predictions). You can also do this manually: go to Settings → System → Satellites → GPS → Clear Ephemeris, then start an outdoor activity and let the watch reacquire satellite signals in an open sky area for 3–5 minutes.
- Update to the latest software — go to Settings → System → Software Update on the Fenix 8 and install any available update. Firmware version 22.35 (released September 2025) and newer include a critical fix for the "route signal loss after tunnel" navigation bug and improved GPS transition handling that prevents false auto-pause triggers. Connect to Garmin Express if the watch reports no update available over-the-air.
