How to Fix Excessive Battery Drain on the Garmin Fenix 8 (AMOLED)

Causes

How to Fix

  1. Disable Always-On Display (AOD) — on the Fenix 8, go to Settings → System → Display → Always-On Display and toggle it Off. With AOD off, the screen stays off until you lift your wrist or press a button, which is the single most impactful change for battery life. The AMOLED panel only lights when needed, returning battery life from ~5 days back toward the advertised 10–16 days in smartwatch mode.
  2. Adjust Pulse Ox settings — go to Settings → Health & Safety → Pulse Ox → Tracking Mode and change it from During Sleep or All Day to On Demand Only. This disables the continuous SpO2 monitoring LED and saves 15–25% of daily battery overhead. Check your SpO2 manually when needed from the glance widget or a dedicated activity.
  3. Remove or limit Connect IQ apps and watch faces — open the Connect IQ app on your phone and remove any third-party watch faces that are not specifically optimized for the Fenix 8's AMOLED display (check app descriptions for "Fenix 8" or "AMOLED" support). Switch to a first-party Garmin watch face like Digital or Hi-Contrast. Also remove glance widgets you don't use, especially Weather, Stock, and Calendar widgets that constantly refresh data.
  4. Curate notifications — open the Garmin Connect app on your phone, go to Settings → Notifications → App Notifications, and toggle off every app that doesn't need to send alerts to your watch. Aim to keep only calls, texts, and 1–2 critical messaging apps. Each notification wakes the screen and vibrates, consuming roughly 0.1% per notification — 100 notifications per day = 10% daily drain just from that.
  5. Restart the watch after every GPS activity — this is a temporary workaround for the post-activity GPS drain bug that affected firmware versions before 22.35. After saving a run, hike, or bike activity, press and hold the upper left button until the watch turns off, then turn it back on. This forces the GPS chipset to fully power cycle. Update to the latest firmware to get the permanent fix.
  6. Disable unnecessary glance widgets — on the Fenix 8, scroll to each glance widget, press the upper right button (Start/Stop) to open it, then hold the middle left button (Up/Menu) and select Remove. Keep only the widgets you actively use daily: Heart Rate, Steps, and perhaps one more. Fewer active widgets mean fewer background sensor reads and Bluetooth data syncs.
  7. Optimize display settings further — go to Settings → System → Display and set Gesture Backlight to On only (not Always-On), reduce Backlight Brightness to 10–20%, and set Backlight Timeout to 4 seconds. Also set Screen Timeout during activities to 8 seconds instead of the default 30 seconds. These small changes compound into significant savings over a full day.
  8. Perform the factory-reset battery recalibration procedure — if battery drain is still excessive (more than 15% per day without GPS): back up your data to Garmin Connect, then go to Settings → System → Reset → Delete Data and Reset Settings. After the reset, charge the watch to 100% uninterrupted for 2 full hours (even if it shows 100% earlier). Then turn off the watch for 30 minutes, turn it back on, and wear it for a normal day. This forces the battery fuel gauge IC to recalibrate its capacity estimates, which has resolved severe phantom drain on multiple Fenix 8 AMOLED units.
