Fix Guide
How to Fix Syncing Problems on the Garmin Fenix 8
Causes
- Bluetooth connection conflicts — the Fenix 8's Bluetooth 5.3 radio can become confused when multiple Bluetooth devices compete for attention (wireless earbuds, car kits, other wearables), causing the phone to show the watch as "connected" in Bluetooth settings while the Garmin Connect app cannot actually communicate with it, resulting in a sync that starts but never completes
- Software version mismatch between watch firmware and Garmin Connect app — when the Fenix 8 runs an outdated firmware version while the Connect app has been updated (or vice versa), the two sides may use incompatible data sync protocols, causing the sync to fail silently or cycle endlessly without transferring any activities or settings
- Corrupted Garmin Connect app cache — accumulated cache files in the Connect app on your phone can become corrupted after repeated sync attempts, especially after large activity uploads or firmware updates, preventing the app from properly handshaking with the watch during the initial sync connection
- Phone battery optimization and background app restrictions — modern phones aggressively manage battery life by restricting background app activity; if Garmin Connect's background permissions are reduced (location services, background app refresh, or battery optimization), the app cannot maintain the persistent Bluetooth connection needed for automatic syncing and may terminate sync mid-transfer
- Watch system memory or file system corruption — the Fenix 8's internal storage can accumulate corrupted temporary files from interrupted syncs, especially if the watch was removed from the charger during a firmware update or if the battery died mid-activity; these corrupted files prevent the sync process from initializing properly and can cause the watch to appear unresponsive to sync requests
- Ant+干扰与Bluetooth无线电争用 — the Fenix 8's internal Ant+ radio (used for external sensors like HRM straps and power meters) and Bluetooth radio share the same 2.4 GHz frequency band; when multiple Ant+ sensors are connected simultaneously alongside Bluetooth, RF contention can cause packet loss during sync, manifesting as a stalled or failed data transfer that requires multiple retries
How to Fix
- Restart both devices — this simple step clears temporary glitches on both sides more often than you would expect. Power your phone completely off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. On the Fenix 8, hold the upper left button (Light) until the power menu appears, select Power Off, wait 15 seconds, then press and hold the Light button again until the Garmin logo appears. After both devices have fully rebooted, open Garmin Connect and pull down on the main screen to trigger a manual sync.
- Forget and re-pair the Bluetooth connection — open your phone's Bluetooth settings, find the Fenix 8 in your paired devices list, tap the info (i) icon, and select Forget This Device or Unpair. Then open Garmin Connect, go to Settings → Garmin Devices, select your Fenix 8, and choose Remove Device. Now add the watch again as a new device — the app will guide you through the full pairing process. This clears out corrupted connection profiles on both sides.
- Update all software — check the Garmin Connect app in your phone's app store and install any available update. On the Fenix 8, go to Settings → System → Software Update (the watch needs to be connected to Wi-Fi or plugged into a computer with Garmin Express). Also update your phone's operating system if a major version update is pending. After updating everything, try syncing again — version mismatches between the watch firmware and the app are one of the most common sync blockers.
- Clear Garmin Connect app cache — on Android, go to Settings → Apps → Garmin Connect → Storage, then tap Clear Cache (do NOT tap Clear Data unless you want to re-login). On iPhone, you cannot clear the cache directly; instead, delete the Garmin Connect app entirely and reinstall it from the App Store. All your activity data is stored on Garmin's servers, so nothing is lost. Log back in after reinstalling, then pair the watch again and test syncing.
- Verify phone permissions and disable battery optimization — go to your phone's app settings for Garmin Connect and ensure the following permissions are all set to Allow: Bluetooth, Location (set to Always or While Using), and Background Activity. On Android, also go to Settings → Apps → Garmin Connect → Battery and select Unrestricted to prevent the OS from killing the app in the background. On iPhone, go to Settings → Garmin Connect → Background App Refresh and turn it On. Disable any active Battery Saver or Low Power Mode while troubleshooting sync.
- Perform a forced soft reset on the Fenix 8 — if nothing else works, hold down the upper left button (Light) for 15–25 seconds continuously. Keep holding even when the power-off menu appears — the screen will eventually go black and the watch will reboot automatically. This soft reset clears the watch's temporary memory and resets the Bluetooth and Ant+ radio stacks without deleting any user data, activities, or settings. After the reset, open Garmin Connect and pull down to sync immediately.
- Delete temporary sync files from the watch's storage — connect the Fenix 8 to your computer via USB charging cable. When the watch appears as a removable drive, navigate to the GARMIN\RemoteSW\ folder and delete all files inside it (these are temporary update and sync cache files). Also check GARMIN\Activities\ for any .FIT files that are 0 bytes in size and delete those. Safely eject the watch, restart it, and try syncing again. This clears corrupted file data that blocks the sync initialization handshake.
- Contact Garmin Support for hardware diagnosis — if you have tried all of the above and the Fenix 8 still refuses to sync with any phone (test with a second phone if possible), there may be a hardware fault with the Bluetooth radio module or the internal storage controller. Contact Garmin Support at support.garmin.com or call their customer service line. Describe exactly which steps you have already tried. The Fenix 8 carries a 2-year limited warranty, and Garmin has been known to issue replacements for units with persistent hardware-level Bluetooth sync failures that software fixes cannot resolve.
