How to Fix Air Link / PC Link Connection Not Working on the Meta Quest 3S

Device: Meta Quest 3S · Meta Added

Causes

  • PC does not meet the minimum requirements for Meta Horizon Link (formerly Oculus Link) — the Quest 3S requires a PC with at least an NVIDIA GTX 1070 / RTX 2060 or AMD RX 5000 series GPU, 8 GB+ RAM, and a USB 3.0 port (for wired Link) or a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router with a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet connection to the PC (for Air Link). Many users attempt to run Link on underpowered laptops or integrated graphics, which the Link software rejects without a clear error message.
  • Air Link requires a dedicated 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection with a router directly wired to the PC via Ethernet — using mesh Wi-Fi, powerline adapters, or connecting the PC via Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet introduces latency spikes and packet loss that cause Air Link to either fail to connect or disconnect after 30–60 seconds of use, even if the signal strength appears strong.
  • Corrupted or outdated Meta Quest PC app and drivers — the Windows-side software stack (Meta Quest Link app, USB drivers, and GPU drivers) must all be up to date. A partially broken installation from a failed update, an anti-cheat software conflict, or a Windows Update that overwrote the USB driver can prevent the headset from establishing a stable connection over USB or Wi-Fi.
  • Windows firewall, antivirus, or VPN software blocking the Air Link communication ports — Air Link uses UDP ports 4960–4970 and TCP port 5667 for discovery and streaming. Third-party security suites (Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender) and corporate VPNs often quarantine these ports, making the Quest 3S unable to discover the PC or maintain a streaming session even though both devices are on the same network.
  • USB port power delivery or bandwidth limitations on the PC — for wired Link, the Quest 3S draws significant power (up to 7.5W) through the USB-C port. Many desktop front-panel USB ports and laptop USB-A ports cannot deliver enough stable power, causing the headset to disconnect intermittently or show a "USB connection speed too slow" error. Older USB controllers or sharing bandwidth with other high-speed USB devices can also throttle the data link below the required 1.5 Gbps threshold.

How to Fix

  1. Verify PC specifications against Link requirements: confirm your PC has a compatible GPU (NVIDIA GTX 1070/RTX 2060 or better, or AMD RX 5000 series or better), at least 8 GB of RAM, and a USB port that supports USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) or higher. Open the Meta Quest PC app and run Settings → General → System Check to automatically verify compatibility. If the check fails on any component, upgrade that component before attempting Link again.
  2. Ensure the Quest 3S headset firmware and PC app are fully updated: on the headset, go to Settings → System → Software Update and install any pending updates. On your PC, open the Meta Quest Link app (download from meta.com if not installed), click Settings → Beta, enable Public Test Channel, then click Check for Updates and install any available app updates. Restart both the headset and PC after updating.
  3. For Air Link specifically, verify your network setup:
    — Connect your PC to the router via a Gigabit Ethernet cable (do NOT use Wi-Fi).
    — Ensure both PC and Quest 3S are on the same 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (check the band in your router settings).
    — Move your Wi-Fi router into the same room as your play space, ideally within 3–5 meters with no walls between the headset and router.
    — Disable Wi-Fi 6E 6 GHz band if using Air Link (some Quest 3S units have better Air Link stability on 5 GHz).
  4. Configure router QoS and channel settings for VR streaming: log into your router's admin panel, locate Quality of Service (QoS) settings, and prioritize traffic from your PC's IP address and the Quest 3S. Set the 5 GHz channel width to 80 MHz (not 160 MHz, which can cause instability on Quest 3S) and manually select a less congested channel using a Wi-Fi analyzer app (e.g., Wi-Fi Analyzer on Android). Avoid channels 52–144 (DFS channels) as they share spectrum with radar, causing periodic connection drops when the router detects radar signals.
  5. For wired Link cable troubleshooting:
    — Use a known-good USB 3.0 or USB-C cable that supports data transfer (5 Gbps+). Official Meta Link cable or a high-quality active USB 3.0 extension cable recommended.
    — Plug the cable directly into a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard (rear I/O) — front-panel ports often have voltage drop.
    — In the Meta Quest PC app, go to Settings → General → Quest Link and ensure USB Cable is selected. If the connection test shows "USB speed too slow," try a different USB port and ensure no other high-bandwidth USB devices are on the same USB controller.
  6. Disable firewall, antivirus, and VPN software temporarily: open Windows Security → Firewall & Network Protection → turn off the firewall for your active network for 30 seconds to test. Also temporarily disable any third-party antivirus or VPN software. If Air Link connects successfully with these off, add exceptions for the Meta Quest Link app in your firewall and antivirus settings: allow OculusClient.exe and OculusDash.exe through both private and public networks.
  7. Repair or reinstall the Meta Quest PC app: open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed Apps, find Meta Quest Link, click the three dots, and select Modify. Choose Repair in the installer that opens. If that does not resolve the issue, uninstall the app completely, download the latest installer from meta.com/quest/setup, and perform a fresh installation. This fixes corrupted registry entries, missing runtime DLLs, and USB driver conflicts that the update process cannot resolve.
  8. Use the Quest 3S in-device wireless diagnostics: put on the headset, open Settings → System → Air Link → Connection Troubleshooter. Run the diagnostic tool — it checks Wi-Fi signal strength, network band (2.4 vs 5 GHz), router latency, and PC discoverability. Follow the recommendations provided by the tool. If the diagnostic shows your PC as undiscoverable, verify that the Meta Quest Link app is running on the PC and that both devices are logged into the same Meta account.
