How to Fix Controller Tracking Issues on the Meta Quest 3S
Causes
- Insufficient or inconsistent room lighting — the Quest 3S relies on its onboard visible-light tracking cameras to detect the controller-mounted IR LED ring. In dim environments (below ~30 lux), the cameras struggle to resolve the LEDs' positions, causing the controllers to drift, float away, or lose positional tracking entirely. Direct sunlight or strong IR sources (heaters, direct sunlight) can overwhelm the cameras and wash out the IR signature of the controller rings.
- Reflective surfaces and featureless walls confuse the inside-out tracking algorithm — the Quest 3S's four grayscale cameras use visual feature points (edges, corners, textures) to build a spatial map. Large mirrors, glass windows, white bare walls, or dark untextured floors create tracking dead zones where the cameras have no reference points, causing the headset to lose its place and the controllers to jump or freeze.
- Obstructed tracking cameras — the four wide-angle cameras on the front corners of the Quest 3S can be partially blocked by a poorly fitted silicone cover, a magnetic lens insert, or even a loose hair or smudge. Any obstruction reduces the cameras' field of view and degrades controller tracking, especially at the edges of your play space.
- Bluetooth interference from nearby devices — the Touch Plus controllers communicate with the headset over Bluetooth Low Energy. Crowded 2.4 GHz environments (Wi-Fi routers, wireless speakers, smart home hubs, microwaves) can cause intermittent packet loss, resulting in controller stuttering, delayed inputs, or temporary disconnection that the tracking system registers as a lost controller.
- Firmware bugs in early Quest 3S Horizon OS versions — several software releases in 2024/2025 (v64 through v69) contained known issues with the controller fusion algorithm that caused the left controller to drift right or the tracking origin to shift after a guardian boundary update. These bugs disproportionately affected the Quest 3S due to its lower-cost Fresnel optics and camera module tolerances compared to the full Quest 3.
How to Fix
- Improve room lighting: turn on overhead lights or add a floor lamp to bring the room to at least 50–100 lux (bright enough to read a book comfortably). Avoid direct sunlight hitting the headset cameras. Do not use dim colored bulbs or RGB lighting alone — the Quest 3S tracking cameras need broad-spectrum white light. A simple test: if you can clearly see the controller rings with your naked eye in the room, the lighting is likely sufficient.
- Clear tracking obstructions and check camera lenses: remove any silicone cover, lens protector, or accessory that wraps around the front face of the Quest 3S. Wipe the four camera lenses with a clean microfiber cloth to remove smudges, dust, or fingerprints. Make sure your hair or clothing is not brushing against the cameras during play — long hair should be tied back.
- Remove reflective surfaces from your play area: cover or move mirrors, picture frames with glass, glossy TV screens, and large windows within the guardian boundary. If you cannot cover them, re-draw your guardian boundary to exclude those areas. For glass-topped desks, place a mat or towel over the surface during VR sessions to give the tracking cameras a textured reference.
- Restart the headset and re-pair the controllers: hold the power button for 3 seconds, then select Restart. After reboot, open Settings → Controllers and select Pair New Controllers. Hold the Menu (left) and Meta (right) buttons simultaneously until the controller LED blinks rapidly. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete pairing. This clears any corrupted Bluetooth pairing data that may cause intermittent tracking drops.
- Reduce wireless interference: move your Wi-Fi router away from your play space (ideally 3+ meters). Temporarily disable nearby Bluetooth speakers, wireless headphones, and other 2.4 GHz devices. Set your router to 5 GHz-only mode for the main network to reduce 2.4 GHz congestion. If you use a USB 3.0 hub near your play area, move it further away — USB 3.0 radiates broadband noise at 2.4 GHz that can interfere with controller Bluetooth.
- Update headset firmware to the latest version: put on the headset and navigate to Settings → System → Software Update. Tap Check for Updates and install any available update. Meta has released multiple patches (v71 and later) specifically targeting Touch Plus controller tracking stability on the Quest 3S. After updating, restart the headset and test tracking in a well-lit room.
- Reset the guardian and create a new boundary: open Settings → Physical Space → Guardian and select Clear Guardian History. Then select Create New Boundary and draw a stationary or room-scale boundary with good lighting and visible floor textures. A freshly calibrated guardian provides the tracking system with updated spatial reference points that can resolve drift caused by accumulated positional errors from previous sessions.
- Factory reset as a last resort (advanced): if tracking issues persist after all the above steps, back up any important data and perform a factory reset: hold Power + Volume Down on the headset for 10 seconds until the boot menu appears. Use volume buttons to navigate to Factory Reset and press the power button to confirm. After reset, set up the headset from scratch (do not restore a cloud backup). This clears all cached spatial maps, guardian data, and corrupted OS files that may be causing persistent tracking bugs at the system level.
