How to Fix Fan Noise and Thermal Throttling on the Minisforum UM890 Pro

Device: Minisforum UM890 Pro · Minisforum Added

Causes

  • The UM890 Pro's cooling system uses a single 120 mm blower fan with an aggressive default fan curve in the BIOS — the fan ramps up to 100% speed at relatively low CPU temperatures (around 65°C), creating audible whining noise even during moderate workloads like web browsing or video playback that do not actually require maximum cooling
  • Dust accumulation on the top intake mesh and the rear exhaust grille — the UM890 Pro's chassis pulls air through the top panel and exhausts through the rear. After several weeks of operation, dust clogs the fine mesh grille on the top cover, reducing airflow by up to 40% and forcing the fan to spin faster to compensate
  • The default BIOS power limit (TDP) for the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS is set to a sustained 65 W or higher in "Performance Mode" — while the CPU can boost to 5.2 GHz at this power level, the single-blower cooling solution in the compact 130 mm chassis cannot dissipate the heat fast enough, causing the CPU to thermally throttle back to 3.0-3.5 GHz within 5-10 minutes under sustained all-core load
  • Insufficient contact between the vapor chamber cooler and the CPU die — the UM890 Pro uses a custom vapor chamber design with factory thermal paste that can suffer from pump-out effect after repeated thermal cycling. When the paste degrades, hotspot temperatures increase by 5-10°C, triggering the fan to ramp earlier and harder
  • The "Cold Wave 2.0" cooling design routes a heat pipe to the bottom chassis, which acts as a secondary heat spreader — if the UM890 Pro is placed on a soft surface (carpet, fabric, cushion) or has inadequate clearance underneath, the bottom heat dissipation path is blocked and internal temperatures rise significantly

How to Fix

  1. Enter the UM890 Pro BIOS by pressing Del during startup. Navigate to AdvancedAMD CBSNBIO Common OptionsSMU Common Options. Set the System Configuration to Balanced or Power Saving instead of Performance. This caps the sustained TDP to approximately 45 W instead of 65 W, reducing heat generation while keeping performance adequate for most productivity tasks
  2. In the BIOS, navigate to Hardware Monitor or PC Health Status and find the Smart Fan Function. Set the fan control mode to Manual or PWM and configure a custom fan curve: 20% speed at 50°C, 35% at 65°C, 50% at 75°C, 75% at 85°C, and 100% only at 95°C. This prevents the fan from ramping unnecessarily during light workloads
  3. Shut down the UM890 Pro, unplug it, and inspect the top intake mesh grille. Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out from the top (blowing downwards into the chassis) while holding the fan blades stationary with a toothpick. Then blow compressed air through the rear exhaust grille from outside-in. For stubborn dust, remove the bottom panel and blow directly through the internal fan blades and heatsink fins
  4. Relocate the UM890 Pro to a position with at least 10 cm (4 inches) of clearance above and behind the unit. Ensure the bottom is on a hard, flat surface — not on carpet, fabric, or a soft laptop mat. The bottom panel acts as a passive heat spreader and needs unobstructed airflow. If rack-mounting, use the Minisforum rack mount kit that provides proper ventilation spacing
  5. In Windows, install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and navigate to PerformanceTuning. Use the Manual tuning option to set a custom power limit of -15% to -20% and reduce the maximum CPU clock frequency by 200-300 MHz. This dramatically reduces heat output with a minimal impact on real-world performance for most workloads
  6. Download HWiNFO64 and run it in Sensors-Only mode. Apply a sustained CPU load (Cinebench R23 or Prime95) for 10 minutes and monitor the CPU Die Temperature and CPU Hotspot Temperature. If the hotspot exceeds 100°C within 5 minutes and clock speeds drop below 3.5 GHz, thermal throttling is active. Use these readings to fine-tune the fan curve and TDP settings
  7. If throttling persists despite the above steps, consider repasting the CPU. Remove the four bottom panel screws and the two fan bracket screws. Gently disconnect the fan cable and lift the cooling assembly off the APU. Clean the old paste from both the vapor chamber cold plate and the CPU die using 99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Apply a high-performance thermal paste such as Honeywell PTM7950 phase-change pad or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme — the UM890 Pro's vapor chamber benefits especially from PTM7950 because it resists pump-out better than standard pastes
  8. For silent operation during media consumption or office work, use the Windows Power & Sleep settings to select the Power Saver plan (or create a custom plan that limits the maximum processor state to 99% in Advanced Power Settings). This prevents the CPU from boosting above base frequency and keeps the fan nearly inaudible at idle and light load
