How to Fix RAM Not Running at Rated Speed or Detected in Single Channel on the Minisforum UM890 Pro
Causes
- The UM890 Pro supports DDR5 SO-DIMM modules up to 96 GB total (48 GB per slot) at speeds up to 5600 MT/s (JEDEC), but actual achievable speed depends on the CPU's integrated memory controller (IMC) and the BIOS's SPD (Serial Presence Detect) configuration — many retail DDR5 kits default to a JEDEC speed of 4800 MT/s or 5200 MT/s and require manual EXPO/XMP enablement in the BIOS to reach their rated speed
- Mixing DDR5 SO-DIMM modules from different manufacturers or even different batches of the same model can cause the IMC to fall back to single-channel mode or the lowest common speed — the UM890 Pro's Ryzen 9 8945HS IMC is sensitive to mismatched memory ranks, die densities (single-rank vs. dual-rank), and timing tables, and it will default to the most conservative JEDEC profile when it detects incompatible SPD data
- One of the two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots may not be fully seated — the UM890 Pro uses standard DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets with clips on both sides. If one side of the module is not fully latched (a common issue when installing RAM into mini PCs with tight chassis clearance), the module may be detected intermittently or operate only in single-channel mode because the second rank is not visible to the memory controller
- The BIOS's default memory configuration may set the memory clock to Auto which picks the slowest JEDEC profile supported by both modules, often 4800 MT/s, regardless of what the sticks are rated for. Additionally, the Gear Down Mode and Power Down Enable features on Ryzen 7040-series platforms can further reduce effective memory bandwidth if left at their default enabled state
- Dust, oxidation, or bent pins inside the DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets — the UM890 Pro's compact chassis has tight airflow paths that can deposit dust onto the memory contacts over time. Even a single dirty contact pin can cause the IMC to fail to train one channel of the memory, resulting in single-channel operation with reduced bandwidth (approximately half the expected memory performance)
How to Fix
- Verify current memory configuration: download CPU-Z or HWiNFO64 and check the Memory section. Under Channel, confirm it displays Dual (or 128-bit). If it shows Single (64-bit), your RAM is running in single-channel mode. Under DRAM Frequency, note the current speed — DDR5-5600 should show approximately 2800 MHz (double data rate = 5600 MT/s)
- Enter the BIOS by pressing Del during startup. Navigate to Advanced → AMD Overclocking → DDR and Infinity Fabric Frequency/Timings (or simply Memory Configuration on some BIOS versions). Set Memory Overclocking to Enabled or EXPO (if your DDR5 kit supports AMD EXPO) or XMP (if your kit supports Intel XMP). This tells the BIOS to use the higher-rated speed profile stored on the module's SPD
- If EXPO/XMP does not work or is not available, set the speed manually: in the same BIOS menu, locate Memory Clock Speed or DRAM Frequency. Change it from Auto to 5600 MHz (or whatever your RAM is rated for, e.g., 5200 or 4800). Also set UCLK DIV1 Mode to UCLK=MEMCLK (1:1 mode) for the best latency on Ryzen 8945HS
- Check memory channel configuration in the BIOS: navigate to Advanced → AMD CBS → UMC Common Options → DDR Options. Look for Channel Interleaving and set it to Enabled (or Channel 1). Also verify Bank Swizzle Mode is Enabled for optimal memory bandwidth. If the BIOS shows only one channel populated, proceed to the next step to reseat the modules
- Shut down the UM890 Pro completely, unplug the AC adapter, and remove the bottom panel (four Phillips screws under the rubber feet). Locate the two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots. Press both retaining clips outward and remove each module. Inspect the gold contacts for any dirt or oxidation — if visible, gently clean them with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Reinstall each module firmly at a 30-degree angle, then press down until both side clips click into place. Ensure the module is straight and fully latched on both sides
- If you have two modules installed but the system detects only one, try swapping the modules between Slot A (closest to the CPU) and Slot B. If the swapped module is still not detected, that module may be faulty — test each module individually in Slot A to isolate the defective one. If only one module works in either slot, the other module is defective and should be replaced
- Install the latest BIOS firmware from the Minisforum UM890 Pro support page. Newer BIOS versions often include improved memory compatibility tables (AGESA microcode updates) that expand the range of supported DDR5 modules and fix single-channel detection bugs. After updating the BIOS, the UM890 Pro will clear its CMOS memory training data and retrain the memory from scratch, which can resolve persistent speed and channel configuration issues
- For maximum performance, install a matched pair of DDR5 SO-DIMMs from the same retail kit that are listed on Minisforum's official memory compatibility list for the UM890 Pro. Recommended kits include Crucial CT2K32G56C46S5 (2×32 GB DDR5-5600) or Kingston Fury KF556S40-32 (2×32 GB EXPO). Matched kits guarantee identical SPD timings and die layouts, which gives the IMC the best chance of training at the rated 5600 MT/s in dual-channel mode
