How to Fix ANC Wind Noise and Howling on the Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro

Causes

  • The Adaptive ANC 2.0 system on the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro uses three external microphones and an internal feedback mic to generate anti-noise — when wind hits the outer microphone grille at speeds above 10 km/h (6 mph), the air pressure differential causes the MEMS diaphragm to oscillate, producing a low-frequency rumble that the ANC processor misinterprets as ambient noise and tries to cancel, creating a feedback howl
  • The 5.5mm planar tweeter is positioned near the outer vent port — in windy conditions, air pressure changes inside the ear canal cause the ANC processor to over-correct the anti-noise waveform, resulting in a high-pitched squeal or whistling that intensifies as wind speed increases, particularly in Adaptive mode where the microphone gain is dynamically increased
  • Incomplete ear tip seal allows external air to leak past the silicone tip and reach the internal feedback microphone — when the ear tip size is too small or worn out, the ANC system loses its reference seal and the anti-noise wave collides with leaked ambient sound, creating an acoustic feedback loop unique to the Buds 4 Pro's 2-way acoustic chamber design
  • Firmware bug in early Samsung Seamless Codec and ANC controller firmware (versions prior to B4P-A301) — the adaptive gain staging on the internal feedback mic does not properly gate wind-impacted samples, causing the DSP to amplify wind turbulence into audible howling that persists until the wind subsides or ANC mode is toggled
  • Obstructed wind-cut mesh on the outer face of each earbud — the Buds 4 Pro has a dedicated windscreen mesh covering the outer microphone port. If this mesh is clogged with dust, lint, or earwax, air pressure cannot vent properly and the MEMS microphone saturates, producing a distorted howl that worsens with ANC enabled

How to Fix

  1. Cycle noise control modes to reset the ANC DSP: open the Galaxy Wearable app on your Samsung phone, tap on Galaxy Buds 4 Pro, go to Noise Controls → tap through Active Noise Cancellation → Ambient Sound → Off. Leave each mode active for 5 seconds. This forces the internal ANC processor to recalibrate its adaptive filters and clear any stuck feedback oscillation. If the howling stops in Ambient Sound or Off mode, the ANC feedback loop is confirmed as the cause
  2. Switch to Ambient Sound mode when outdoors: in the Galaxy Wearable app, set Noise Controls to Ambient Sound and adjust the volume slider to level 1–2. This disables the anti-noise generation while still passing through ambient sound, completely eliminating ANC feedback howl. You can set up a Quick Tap shortcut: Galaxy Wearable → Touch Controls → hold Left/Right → assign Noise Control to quickly toggle between ANC and Ambient Sound
  3. Clean the outer microphone windscreen mesh: use a dry, soft-bristled brush (a clean, dry toothbrush works) to gently brush the small oval mesh grilles on the upper-outer edge of each earbud — these are the wind-cut ports for the ANC microphones. Brush in multiple directions with light pressure. Do NOT use compressed air, liquids, or sharp objects — the windscreen mesh is a thin acoustic membrane that can be permanently deformed by forced air or moisture, permanently ruining ANC performance
  4. Run the Ear Tip Fit Test and change sizes: open Galaxy Wearable → Galaxy Buds 4 Pro → Earbud fit test. Follow the instructions to put both earbuds in and tap Start. A red or yellow result means the seal is insufficient — swap to a larger ear tip from the included XS/S/M/L/XL set. A proper seal is critical because the Buds 4 Pro's 2-way speaker system creates positive pressure in the ear canal that the ANC system relies on as an acoustic reference — a leaky seal breaks this reference and triggers howling
  5. Disable Adaptive ANC and use manual ANC instead: open Galaxy Wearable → Noise Controls → toggle off "Adaptive ANC 2.0" (the automatic adjustment slider). Then set Active Noise Cancellation to a fixed level (Level 3–4). Adaptive ANC constantly adjusts microphone gain based on environmental analysis, and wind turbulence tricks the AI model into boosting gain aggressively, creating howl. Fixed ANC uses a static filter set that is far less reactive to wind artifacts
  6. Update firmware via Galaxy Wearable: open the Galaxy Wearable app, tap Galaxy Buds 4 Pro → Earbuds settings → About earbuds → Update earbuds software. Tap Download and install if an update is available. Samsung released firmware B4P-A302 and later specifically addressing the ANC wind feedback loop by improving the gating logic on the external microphones — this is the single most effective long-term fix for wind howling on the Buds 4 Pro
  7. Reset and re-pair the earbuds: place both earbuds in the charging case and close the lid. Open the Galaxy Wearable app, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) → Reset → Reset earbuds. After reset, open the case lid near your Samsung phone and tap Connect to re-pair. This clears any corrupted ANC calibration data stored in the internal DSP memory that may be locked to a faulty baseline from a previous wind event
  8. If howling is severe and persists only in one earbud regardless of which ear it's in, the external ANC microphone on that earbud may be physically damaged by moisture or impact. Contact Samsung Support for a warranty replacement — the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro carries a one-year limited warranty, and individual earbud replacements are available through Samsung's Parts Self-Repair program for about $69
