Fix Guide

How to Fix ANC Calibration Failure on the Sony WF-1000XM6

Device: Sony WF-1000XM6 · Sony Added

Causes

  • The QN3e HD Noise Cancelling Processor's adaptive calibration algorithm fails to initialise properly when the earbuds detect sudden pressure changes (e.g., moving between indoor and outdoor environments or during altitude changes on aircraft)
  • Ear tips that do not form a proper acoustic seal — using the wrong size or worn-out silicone ear tips prevents the internal microphones from establishing an accurate noise baseline during the 3-second auto-calibration on insertion
  • Accumulated earwax or debris blocking the front-vent microphone mesh or the rear ANC feedback microphone ports, causing the processor to receive garbled ambient sound readings
  • Firmware bugs in the adaptive sound control engine that can leave the ANC processor in an uncalibrated state after switching between Ambient Sound and Noise Cancelling modes rapidly

How to Fix

  1. Remove both earbuds from your ears and place them back in the charging case for 10 seconds. Close the lid to force a full power cycle of the QN3e processor, then take them out and reinsert — the auto-calibration tone should sound within 3 seconds
  2. If auto-calibration still fails, go to the Sony Headphones Connect app → Sound → Ambient Sound Control → toggle "Adaptive Sound Control" OFF, then ON again. This forces the app to re-run the calibration routine against the current environment
  3. Check your ear tip seal using the app's "Fit Checker" tool (Sony Headphones Connect → System → Earbud Fit Checker). If the seal is poor, try the next larger or smaller ear tip size — the WF-1000XM6 uses the same EP-NI1000 tips as the XM5, and the wrong size is the #1 cause of ANC calibration failure
  4. Clean the earbud speaker mesh and the two small microphone ports on the outer face using a dry, soft-bristled brush (a clean, dry toothbrush works). Do NOT use liquids or compressed air, which can force debris deeper into the mesh. The front-vent mic is the small slot near the charging contact on the stem
  5. Update the earbud firmware in Sony Headphones Connect → System → Software Update. Sony has released multiple QN3e firmware patches addressing adaptive sound calibration edge cases — ensure you are on the latest version (check the Release Notes for "ANC stability" mentions)
  6. Factory reset the earbuds: place both buds in the case, keep the lid open, press and hold the touch sensors on both buds simultaneously for 7 seconds until the indicator flashes blue twice. Re-pair with your phone and reconfigure ANC in the app
