How to Fix LDAC Audio Dropout & Stuttering on the Sony WF-1000XM6

Causes

  • LDAC at 990 kbps (highest bitrate) is extremely sensitive to radio frequency interference — walking past Wi-Fi routers, microwave ovens, or crowded Bluetooth environments (airports, trains) causes packet loss that manifests as 0.5-2 second dropouts
  • Physical obstruction between the phone and the left earbud (the primary Bluetooth receiver) — body blocking, keeping the phone in a back pocket, or wearing thick winter clothing attenuates the Bluetooth 5.3 signal enough to drop LDAC frames
  • The phone's Bluetooth stack may limit LDAC to "Best Effort" (adaptive bitrate) mode by default instead of "Sound Quality Priority" (fixed 990 kbps), causing the earbuds to constantly renegotiate bitrate during interference — this renegotiation itself produces audible stuttering
  • Third-party equalizer apps or Dolby Atmos / DTS processing on the source device can add latency and processing overhead that conflicts with the LDAC encoding pipeline, leading to buffer underruns

How to Fix

  1. Open Sony Headphones Connect → Sound → LDAC Playback Quality and set it to "Sound Quality Priority" (fixed 990 kbps). If dropouts persist, switch to "Best Effort" (adaptive) which dynamically drops to 660 or 330 kbps during interference — audio quality reduces slightly but dropouts stop
  2. On Android, go to Developer Options → Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec and set "LDAC Playback Quality" to "Optimised for Audio Quality" (990 kbps). If your phone lacks these options, install "LDAC Codec Enabler" from the Play Store to force 990 kbps mode
  3. Keep your phone in a front pocket or jacket breast pocket — avoid back pockets, bags, or left-side pants pockets (the left earbud is the primary receiver; distance and body block are the most common LDAC dropout triggers)
  4. Disable any system-wide audio processing: turn off Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, or any third-party equaliser (Wavelet, Poweramp EQ) while streaming LDAC. These layers add buffering that can starve the LDAC encoder, especially on mid-range phones
  5. In Settings → Bluetooth, forget the WF-1000XM6 and re-pair. During re-pairing, ensure your phone's system audio codec preference resets to LDAC by checking the Bluetooth device details page — some phones fall back to AAC silently after a glitched LDAC session
  6. If dropouts only happen in specific locations (gym, office, train station), the environment has too much 2.4 GHz RF congestion. Switch to AAC in the Sony Headphones Connect app — it uses less bandwidth and is far more resilient. The WF-1000XM6's DSEE Extreme upscaling will partially compensate for the loss of LDAC
