How to Fix Bluetooth Multipoint Connection and Audio Dropout Issues on the Sony WH-1000XM6

Causes

  • LE Audio codec incompatibility with multipoint — the WH-1000XM6 supports both Classic Bluetooth (AAC/SBC/LDAC) and LE Audio (LC3) simultaneously, but when multipoint is enabled with one device connected via LE Audio and the other via Classic Bluetooth, the Bluetooth 5.3 controller can experience a codec negotiation conflict that causes audio to stutter or drop out entirely for 2–5 seconds every 30–60 seconds
  • Multipoint firmware bug on versions prior to 2.2.0 — Sony confirmed that early WH-1000XM6 firmware had a known issue where the audio link layer failed to properly arbitrate between two active A2DP connections; when a notification alert arrives on the secondary device (e.g., a text message on the phone while music is playing from the laptop), the headphones would drop the primary audio stream instead of mixing the notification tone, resulting in a 3–8 second silence gap

How to Fix

  1. Update the WH-1000XM6 firmware — open the Sony | Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → Firmware Update, and install the latest firmware (at least version 2.2.0 or newer). This is the single most important fix for multipoint dropouts. Sony's 2.2.0 update (June 2025) specifically addressed the A2DP arbitration bug that caused audio gaps during multipoint operation. Version 2.3.0 further improved LE Audio coexistence. Keep the app in the foreground and keep the headphones charged above 50% during the update.
  2. Disable LE Audio on your smartphone — on Android 14/15, go to Settings → Connected Devices → Bluetooth → Sony WH-1000XM6 → LE Audio and toggle it Off, forcing the headphones to use Classic Bluetooth (AAC/LDAC). On iOS (which does not support LE Audio), this step is unnecessary. Disabling LE Audio eliminates the codec negotiation conflict between LC3 and AAC/SBC that causes multipoint stutter. The headphones will still support multipoint using Classic Bluetooth only, which is more mature and stable.
  3. Switch audio codec to AAC — in the Sony Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → Bluetooth → Audio Codec (LDAC) and select AAC instead of LDAC. While LDAC offers higher bitrate (990 kbps), it is more susceptible to RF interference and packet loss in multipoint mode. AAC at 256 kbps provides reliable, glitch-free audio under multipoint conditions. For Android users who prefer quality, you can toggle back to LDAC when using the headphones with a single device and switch to AAC when multipoint is active.
  4. Reduce the number of simultaneously connected Bluetooth peripherals — disconnect or turn off Bluetooth on any other peripherals not in active use (smartwatch, fitness tracker, earbuds, keyboard, mouse). Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings and unpair devices you don't need; each active peripheral shares the host's Bluetooth controller bandwidth and can interfere with the WH-1000XM6's A2DP stream. On a PC, go to Device Manager → Bluetooth → your Bluetooth adapter → Properties → Advanced and disable any unused Bluetooth profiles.
  5. Toggle the "Prioritize Stable Connection" setting — in the Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → Bluetooth → Prioritize Stable Connection. If it is currently On, turn it Off. If it is Off, turn it On. This counterintuitive fix works because the setting behaves differently across smartphone Bluetooth stacks — on some devices (especially Samsung One UI 6.x), enabling it switches to SBC encoding that disrupts multipoint, while on others (stock Android), disabling it stops the Bluetooth stack from aggressively re-negotiating codecs every time a secondary device sends audio. Test with your specific phone to find the right state.
  6. Manually re-pair the headphones and clear Bluetooth cache — on your phone, go to Settings → Bluetooth, find the WH-1000XM6 entry, and tap Forget. Then on the headphones, perform a factory reset: turn them off, press and hold both the Power button and NC/Ambient button simultaneously for 7 seconds until the LED flashes blue/red and turns off. Wait 30 seconds, then pair fresh. On Android, also go to Settings → Apps → Bluetooth → Storage → Clear Cache (do not clear app data). On Windows, go to Device Manager → Bluetooth adapter → Driver → Uninstall Device, then restart the computer to reinstall the Bluetooth driver fresh.
  7. Move your Wi-Fi router to channel 1, 6, or 11 (2.4 GHz) or use the 5 GHz band — if audio dropouts occur in specific rooms or near your Wi-Fi router, log into your router administration page and set the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi channel to 1, 6, or 11 (the only non-overlapping channels in 2.4 GHz). Avoid channel bonding (40 MHz or 80 MHz width on 2.4 GHz), which heavily overlaps the Bluetooth frequency range. Better yet, ensure your devices connect to the 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi band instead, leaving the 2.4 GHz band clear for Bluetooth. On a dual-band router, give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks different SSIDs so you can manually connect your streaming device to 5 GHz.
  8. Disable multipoint and use single-device connection as a fallback — if dropouts persist after all the above steps, disable multipoint entirely: in the Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → Bluetooth → Connection to 2 devices simultaneously and set it to Off. Use the headphones with only one source device at a time. This eliminates the root cause of multipoint-related audio arbitration. You can manually switch between devices by pressing the power button once (voice prompt: "Bluetooth connected" will announce the switch to the last paired device) without needing to re-pair each time.
