Fix Guide
How to Fix Microphone Not Working or Muffled on Calls on the Sony WH-1000XM6
Causes
- Microphone mesh blocked by ear pad foam compression — the WH-1000XM6 has 12 microphones (6 per earcup: 4 external + 2 internal), and the two external voice-pickup microphones on each earcup are partially recessed behind foam covers; if the ear pads are compressed from storage in a tight case or from long wear sessions, the foam shifts and covers the microphone ports, significantly muffling voice pickup as reported by multiple users on the Sony Community forums
- Aggressive AI noise reduction algorithm during calls — the XM6's beamforming AI voice pickup uses artificial intelligence to isolate your voice from background noise; when the algorithm is too aggressive (particularly in firmware versions prior to 2.2.0), it cancels your actual speech along with environmental noise, especially when you are lying down, reclining, or turning your head during a call — the AI incorrectly identifies your voice as wind or ambient chatter and filters it out
- Speak-to-Chat feature overriding the microphone — the Speak-to-Chat feature pauses audio and amplifies ambient sound when it detects your voice; however, if Speak-to-Chat is enabled during a call (it is intended for music playback, not calls), it can erroneously toggle the microphone into ambient-passthrough mode, making your voice sound hollow, distant, or muffled to the other caller, as the headphones are mixing ambient mics into the conversation channel instead of using the primary voice beamforming mic array
- Bluetooth profile mismatch (HFP vs. A2DP) on PC or Mac — when connected to a computer, the WH-1000XM6 registers as both a stereo headset (A2DP) and a hands-free device (HFP). Windows and macOS often default to the HFP profile at 8 kHz mono sampling when the microphone is activated, which drastically reduces audio quality for both incoming and outgoing audio. The caller hears a muffled, robot-like voice because the headset is transmitting at telephone-quality 8 kHz instead of the wideband 16 kHz or fullband 32 kHz that the XM6 hardware supports
- Wind noise reduction mesh clogged by debris or moisture — the WH-1000XM6 includes a specialized wind noise reduction mesh covering the external microphone ports. When this mesh collects dust, lint, or moisture (from rain, sweat, or high humidity), the acoustic impedance changes and the microphones become less sensitive to your voice while remaining sensitive to internal vibration noise, creating a muffled effect that persists across all call scenarios and environments
- Voice isolation feature on the smartphone conflicting with the headset's own AI processing — modern smartphones (Google Pixel 9/10 series, Samsung Galaxy S25/S26, iPhone 17 Pro) have built-in voice isolation for Bluetooth headsets. When both the phone's voice isolation and the WH-1000XM6's AI noise processing are active simultaneously, the two algorithms can cancel each other's signal corrections, resulting in heavily processed, muffled, or intermittently gated audio — your voice cuts in and out or sounds like it's coming through a low-pass filter
How to Fix
- Check and clean the microphone mesh ports — inspect the small microphone openings on the outer surface of each earcup. There are two visible mic ports near the bottom edge of each earcup (the external voice pickup mics). Use a dry, soft-bristled toothbrush or a clean makeup brush to gently sweep across the ports. Do not use compressed air (it can force debris deeper into the microphone cavity). If the mesh appears wet, let the headphones dry naturally in a room-temperature environment for 4–6 hours. Cleaning the mic mesh resolves the most common cause of persistently muffled call audio.
- Disable Speak-to-Chat during calls — open the Sony | Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → System → Speak-to-Chat, and toggle it Off. Speak-to-Chat is designed for music playback, not phone calls, and its voice-detection algorithm interferes with the primary call microphone feed. After disabling it, make a test call — the muffled/hollow quality should immediately improve. You can re-enable Speak-to-Chat when you're done with calls and want to use it for music playback.
- Update firmware to the latest version — in the Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → Firmware Update and install version 2.2.0 or newer. Sony addressed the overly aggressive AI noise reduction algorithm in firmware 2.2.0, specifically fixing the issue where the beamforming AI canceled the user's voice when reclining or turning the head during calls. Version 2.3.0 further improved voice pickup for users in noisy environments. Connect the headphones to a charger before updating and keep the app open until complete.
- Disable smartphone-side voice isolation features — on an iPhone (17 series): go to Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → Phone Noise Cancellation and toggle it Off. On Samsung Galaxy S25/S26: during a call, pull down the quick settings panel, tap the Voice Focus icon to toggle it off. On Google Pixel 9/10: open the Phone app, go to Settings → Call Settings → Clear Calling and toggle it Off. This prevents double-processing conflicts where both the phone and the headphones attempt to apply voice isolation, which is the primary cause of muffled/gated call audio on modern smartphones paired with the XM6.
- Switch the PC/Mac to the correct Bluetooth profile — on Windows 11: open Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Devices, find the WH-1000XM6, click the three dots, and select Properties. Under Audio, ensure the Hands-Free Telephony checkbox is ticked. Then go to Settings → System → Sound → Input and select Headset (Sony WH-1000XM6 Hands-Free) as the input device. On macOS: open System Settings → Sound → Input and select WH-1000XM6 (not the Hands-Free version). On Windows, if you do not need the microphone, set the output device to Headphones (Sony WH-1000XM6 Stereo) instead of the Hands-Free variant to restore full 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo output quality.
- Perform a microphone self-test using the Sony Sound Connect app — open the Sound Connect app, go to Device Settings → Voice Pickup → Test Microphone. The app will play back a recording of your voice through the headphones. Speak normally, then whisper, then speak from a 30-degree angle. Listen for clarity, static, or muffled playback. If the test recording is clear but live calls are still muffled, the issue is entirely on the smartphone/PC side (steps 4 and 5). If the test recording itself is muffled, clean the mic mesh (step 1) and update firmware (step 3).
- Factory reset the headphones — if the microphone is still muffled after all the steps above, turn the headphones off, then press and hold both the Power button and the NC/Ambient button simultaneously for 7 seconds until the LED flashes blue/red and turns off. Wait 30 seconds. This clears any corrupted DSP configuration or stuck microphone processing state. Set up the headphones from scratch and re-pair with your devices. Test a call immediately after the reset without changing any settings first — if the audio is clear, re-apply your preferred settings one at a time to identify which one was causing the issue.
- Contact Sony Support if hardware replacement is needed — if the microphone fails the app self-test (step 6) even after cleaning, firmware update, and factory reset, one or more of the 12 microphones may be physically defective. This is most common in units manufactured before April 2025 where the wind mesh adhesive deteriorated and allowed the mesh to detach and vibrate against the microphone diaphragm. Contact Sony Support for a warranty evaluation. The WH-1000XM6 carries a 1-year limited warranty, and Sony has been issuing replacements for units with confirmed microphone array hardware failures, particularly on the left earcup where the primary voice-pickup microphones are located.
