Fix Guide
How to Fix Multipoint Connection Drops on the Sony WH-1000XM6
Causes
- Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint maintains two active A2DP streams simultaneously — when both devices are actively streaming audio, the QN3 processor must time-slice the single Bluetooth radio between the two links, causing a 2–4 second switching delay during which audio can stutter or cut out
- LE Audio (LC3 codec) multipoint uses a different connection profile than classic A2DP — if one device connects via LE Audio and the other via classic Bluetooth, the headphones maintain two separate radio stacks that can conflict during handoff, dropping one connection entirely
- The WH-1000XM6 prioritises the most recently active audio source — a brief notification or system sound on device A while music is playing on device B triggers an unnecessary handover, and the headphones can leave device B in a "hung" state waiting for the A2DP stream to resume
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi congestion from nearby access points causes Bluetooth packet loss — the WH-1000XM6's Bluetooth radio shares the 2.4 GHz ISM band and in crowded RF environments (airports, offices, apartment blocks) the error correction retries exceed the available time window, forcing a connection reset
How to Fix
- Reset multipoint pairing from scratch: turn off Bluetooth on both connected devices, then long-press the NC/Ambient button on the WH-1000XM6 for 7 seconds until the blue LED flashes rapidly (pairing mode). Re-pair your primary device first, then use Sony Headphones Connect → System → Bluetooth → Multipoint to add the secondary device fresh
- Switch your secondary device to SBC or AAC instead of LDAC — LDAC at 990 kbps consumes nearly all available Bluetooth bandwidth, leaving insufficient radio time for the second A2DP stream. In Sony Headphones Connect → Sound → Bluetooth Connection Quality, select "Stable Connection" which caps the bitrate and prioritises multipoint reliability
- Disable LE Audio on your secondary device: on Android, go to Settings → Connected devices → WH-1000XM6 → gear icon → toggle "Use LE Audio" OFF. On iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth → tap the i icon next to WH-1000XM6 → toggle "LE Audio" OFF. This forces classic A2DP multipoint which is inherently more stable for dual-stream use
- Turn off multipoint if you don't need simultaneous connections: Sony Headphones Connect → System → Bluetooth → Multipoint → OFF. Manually switch devices via the Bluetooth menu — this eliminates switching lag entirely and is the most reliable configuration for single-device listening
- Reduce 2.4 GHz congestion: on your PC or laptop, connect only to 5 GHz Wi-Fi and disable the 2.4 GHz adapter. On your router, consider disabling the 2.4 GHz SSID or setting the channel to a non-overlapping frequency (1, 6, or 11) away from neighbouring networks
- Factory reset the headphones: fold them closed, connect USB-C power, hold the NC/Ambient button for 10 seconds (red LED turns blue when reset completes). This clears any corrupted multipoint connection table and resets the Bluetooth stack
